England beat Scotland to get T20 World Cup bid back on track

England secured a five-wicket victory over Scotland in the T20 World Cup group-stage match at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on Saturday, keeping their hopes of reaching the Super Eights alive. Tom Banton anchored the chase with an unbeaten 63, guiding his side to a target of 155-5 in 18.2 overs after Scotland was bowled out for 152. Scotland’s innings had been built around a 71-run fourth-wicket stand between Richie Berrington and Tom Bruce, with Berrington finishing on 49 off 32 balls, including five fours and two sixes.

England’s bowlers exerted far greater control than in their previous match, where they had conceded 196 to the West Indies in Mumbai. Captain Jofra Archer made the early breakthroughs, removing George Munsey in his second over by inducing a top-edge caught by Banton, and then dismissing Brandon McMullen caught in the deep by Phil Salt. Archer finished with figures of 2-24 from four overs, while Adil Rashid was the most economical, taking 3-36. Liam Dawson contributed with 2-34, including the wicket of Bruce, who was caught at deep square leg by Sam Curran.

Scotland’s innings unraveled after the loss of their third wicket, with Berrington trapped leg-before by Rashid in the 14th over, leaving the side at 113-4. The collapse continued as the last seven wickets fell for just 39 runs, with Michael Jones caught by Jacob Bethell off Curran, reducing Scotland to 42-3 at the end of the power play. Mark Watt was particularly expensive, conceding 22 runs in his first over to Banton, who struck three sixes off him.

England’s chase began shakily under the floodlights, as the new ball swung and the sun dipped. Phil Salt was dismissed third ball by McMullen for two, and Jos Buttler was caught off Brad Currie’s bowling shortly after, leaving England at 13-2. Bethell then accelerated with a six and two fours off McMullen in the fifth over, and a 66-run partnership followed before Bethell, on 32, scooped a leg-side delivery from Oliver Davidson straight to Brad Wheal at short fine leg. Harry Brook departed soon after, scooping Michael Leask over his shoulder to Wheal, but England maintained control and reached the target with 10 balls to spare.

Banton finished unbeaten on 63, supported by Jacob Bethell’s 32, Sam Curran’s 28, and Will Jacks’s 16 off 10 balls, which included a six and a four. England’s next match, against Italy at the same venue on Monday, will determine whether they progress to the Super Eights. A victory would secure their place in the next round.
